and were lucky enough to catch some absolutely beautiful Spring weather. The blossoms were in full swing, painting the trees (and later the ground) pink.
Every time we head back to the States, we try to pay careful attention to what we notice. Japan is so "normal" for us now, so it is always fun to see what about the US seems "abnormal." I think of it as a gauge of how far we are drifting from our old American ways.
This trip - no question - we noticed size. Everything in America is bigger. Clothes are bigger (I can actually fit into size small t-shirts!), cars are bigger, streets are bigger. Most shocking was the big food. A small latte would arrive in the same cup we would expect to get in Japan if we had ordered an extra large (and it was pre-sweetened - gross), and just check out the size of this pretzel!
Otherwise, the US seemed really normal to us - which was bad because we settled in a little too much. I wouldn't say it was hard coming back to Japan, but it was definitely weird, and it has taken us a few days to get back into the Japan swing of things.
If we saw you in the US - thanks for making time for us! It was great!
