Last weekend was a long weekend here in Japan due to "Marine Day." We decided to take the opportunity to make it a getaway weekend. With Michael's work being so busy, we decided to just do a short overnight trip, and ended up in Hakone - a hot-spring region just outside of Tokyo known for its great views of Mt. Fuji - and it has the added benefit of being in the mountains, which means it was a lot cooler than Tokyo.
Here is Michael by the Torii gate at the entrance to Motohakone - the town we stayed in.
To get there, we had to take a boat across Lake Ashi. Unfortunately, it was very overcast, so there were no views of Fuji to be had. (We've already decided to come back in the fall when the weather is clear.)The ferry boat is made up to look like a pirate ship. It was pretty over the top!
Here is our inn - we stayed at a Japanese style inn. Our room had tatami mat floors, and we slept on futons. The toilet and shower were in the hall.
Motohakone has a great local shrine - it is pretty big and has beautiful grounds. Here is the road leading up to the shrine.
The Shrine itself then leads down a path to the lake, where there is a huge torii gate in the water.
More pictures to come!
