Motohakone - Part Three

Michael and I were hoping to spend our last day in Hakone hiking, but the weather was miserable and rainy when we woke up - so we moved on to Plan B. We decided to check out the Open Air Museum.
The Open Air Museum is half contemporary art museum and half sculpture garden. It was opened in the 1960s as a showcase for contemporary sculpture, and has since expanded to hold several galleries as well, including an impressive Picasso collection.
A lot of the sculptures are intended to be interactive. The best by far was this playscape - it is inside a "nest" that looked like Lincoln Logs. The play area is crocheted nylon cords with ball-swings and a maze inside (if you look closely, you can see kids INSIDE the mesh). The only downside is that it is limited to kids 13 and under. If only I were 13 again! (and that is definitely the ONLY time you will hear me wish to be 13 again...)

There were some adult-interactive exhibits as well - here I am peeking out of the labyrinth garden.

Not only were the sculptures fun and interesting, the setting is just amazing. The museum is situated on a mountainside with spectacular views. Here you can see the Picasso exhibit peeking out over the hill.

We had so many great Hakone pictures, I couldn't narrow them down, so I will be posting some extras soon. Enjoy!
