This Weekend's DIY Project

I have been reading various blogs about home decor and keeping an eco-friendly house. There are lots of things I do already, like clean with baking soda and vinegar, hanging the laundry dry, etc. I recently read a great idea about how to make your own reed diffuser using essential oils instead of chemical scents, so I decided to try it. We got rid of all our scented diffusers and candles when we moved to Japan, and I have decided not to stock up on new ones. There is, however, something to be said about a nice smelling home. I am really happy with the results.

Materials:

1. Small vase - I used a sake pourer I found at the 100 Yen store.

2. "Reeds" - I used wooden skewers from the 100 Yen store.

3. Essential Oils - I use lavender exclusively. I already had it on hand to put in the vinegar I use for cleaning.

Fill vase 1/2 to 3/4 full with water. Put 20 or so drops of essential oil (I didn't really count the drops). Cut off ends of skewers to allow water to soak up into them. Put reeds in vase - the more reeds the more scent.

Voila! Instant all-natural reed diffuser. Total cost: 200 Yen (about $2).
