Izu-Oshima - Part 1

Last weekend was a long weekend here in Japan, so we decided to take the opportunity for a little getaway. Izu-Oshima is the largest island in the Izu Island group about 180 kilometers from Tokyo. We got there via Jetfoil, which was definitely the way to travel. The traditional ferry takes 8 hours to get there, and the Jetfoil only took 2 hours!

The Jetfoil was like an airplane - it had airplane seats, and because it lifts out of the water, the ride is actually really smooth - no sea sickness for me!

Izu-Oshima is a volcanic island (like the rest of Japan), and has an active volcano, Mt. Mihara. Mihara last erupted in 1986. The black areas on the mountain are lava flows from the '86 eruption.

We climbed Mt. Mihara on Saturday afternoon. It was a gorgeous day.

Because the volcano is active, there are cement shelters periodically along the trail. Supposedly they will protect you in the event of an eruption, but I don't see how they wouldn't turn into big ovens if covered with lava. I'm just glad we didn't have an eruption when we were there...

The crater was really interesting - here you can see the steam coming out of cracks in the rock.

Unfortunately, there was no glowing, bubbling magma at the bottom (that we could see).
