Here are more pictures of the Hase-dara. This particular part of the complex was a temple devoted to lost or never-born children. There were thousands and thousands of little statues.
In another part of the temple, they gave the statues little staffs and even dressed some of them up!
This is the view from the Hase-dara over Kamakura and to the ocean. The day we were there (middle of December), it was easily in the high 60s and there were tons of surfers and wind-surfers out in the water.

that is so neat... do people purchase a statue for babies lost?
Wow, that must have been amazing to see in person. It is interesting, how some cultures really try hard to forget especially lost babies. A lost baby or one that dies is a major loss that it seems the Japanese culture honors this.
I don't know how you get a statue put there - I should look into it....
